Ninth Anniversary of Solo Sandeng’s Death Sparks Renewed Calls for Justice

As Gambians commemorate the ninth anniversary of Solo Sandeng’s death, United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Secretary General, H.E. ANM Ousainu Darboe, has issued a strong appeal for justice, accountability, and immediate government action to honor the slain activist and other victims of the Jammeh regime.

A Tribute to a Fallen Patriot

In a solemn statement marking Solo Sandeng Day, Darboe praised the late political activist as “a true patriot who stood firm in the face of tyranny.” He condemned Sandeng’s brutal murder on April 14, 2016, following a peaceful protest demanding electoral reform, emphasizing that his death remains a “stark reminder of the brutality of dictatorship.”

“Solo Sandeng’s unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights continues to inspire us all,” Darboe said. “His sacrifice, and those of many others who suffered under Yahya Jammeh’s regime, must never be forgotten.”

Urgent Call for TRRC Implementation

Darboe urged President Adama Barrow’s government to fully implement the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). He called for expedited reparations for victims, prosecution of identified perpetrators, and the preservation of fallen patriots’ legacies through national memorials and education.

“The victims of Jammeh’s regime, including the families of Solo Sandeng, Ebrima Solo Krummah, and countless others, deserve justice, reparations, and closure,” Darboe stated, warning that delays only prolong suffering and obstruct national healing.

UDP’s Solidarity with Victims

Reaffirming the UDP’s commitment, Darboe vowed that the party would never abandon the fight for justice, declaring, “Your pain is our pain. Your fight for justice is our fight.”

As Gambians gathered nationwide to honor Sandeng’s memory, Darboe encouraged citizens to uphold democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in tribute to his legacy.

“Rest in peace, Solo Sandeng. Your courage lives on.”
