Nigeria’s Agriculture Minister Decries Decline in Agricultural Research Institutes

Nigeria’s Agric Minister Laments Poor State of Agricultural Research Institutes

Minister Kyari Raises Concerns Over Declining Research Quality

Abuja, Nigeria – Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of agricultural research institutes across the country. The minister voiced these concerns during a meeting with newly appointed board chairmen of federal agricultural agencies in Abuja on Friday, April 25, 2025.

Research Decline Threatens Food Security

Minister Kyari highlighted the critical decline in agricultural research, particularly in seed development and agronomic practices. “What we have seen recently is the deterioration in terms of research, especially into good seeds and good agronomic practices,” Kyari stated. He emphasized that robust research is essential for addressing Nigeria’s pressing food security challenges.

Climate Change Demands Resilient Solutions

The minister pointed to climate change as a persistent challenge requiring adaptive strategies. “We have had climate change, which is a natural phenomenon that is here to stay. We must adapt by developing drought-resistant, heat-resistant, and high-yielding seeds with short gestation periods,” Kyari explained. He noted that shrinking arable land makes these innovations crucial for maintaining food production.

Budgetary Concerns and Agricultural Priorities

Kyari also expressed disappointment with non-agricultural provisions in budgets, urging research institutes to exercise greater care in budget preparation and implementation. He stressed that agriculture must remain the primary focus to ensure food availability and affordability for Nigeria’s growing population.

New Leadership Brings Agricultural Expertise

The minister welcomed the appointment of 19 APC chairmen to lead agricultural agencies, noting that many are practical farmers with hands-on experience. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, APC Chairman for Cross River State and the Rubber Research Institute, affirmed the board chairmen’s commitment to collaborating with the ministry to achieve food sovereignty.

Government Commitment to Agricultural Transformation

Abubakar Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Food Security, reinforced the administration’s dedication to sectoral growth. “With our combined efforts, agricultural sector growth will happen,” Abdullahi assured. He proposed a retreat to align strategies and drive prosperity in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

This development comes as Nigeria seeks to boost agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and improve livelihoods through enhanced research and strategic partnerships.
