Spotify Rolls Out Lossless Audio in South Africa, Implements New Tiered Pricing
In a move that blends enhanced value with increased cost, Spotify has announced a significant overhaul of its subscription plans for South African users. For the second time in just four months, the streaming giant is raising prices, but this revision introduces a long-awaited feature: lossless, high-fidelity audio streaming.
A New Three-Tier System Replaces Old Plans
The new structure, which is also launching in India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, replaces the previous single Premium plan with three distinct tiers. Notably, the Duo plan, which offered a discount for two users, has been discontinued in the South African market.
The freshly minted plans are designed to cater to different user needs and budgets:
Spotify Premium Lite (R69.99/month)
Positioned as the entry-level option, Lite provides a single account with audio quality capped at 160kbit/s, effectively serving as a mobile-focused, ad-free listening experience.
Spotify Premium Standard (R94.99/month)
This plan mirrors the benefits of the old Premium offering but at a new price point. Subscribers get access to downloads and improved streaming quality of up to 320kbit/s.
Spotify Premium Platinum (R179.99/month)
The new flagship tier is where Spotify is packing in the premium features. For R179.99 per month, users receive up to three accounts for people living at the same address, the headline-grabbing lossless audio (24-bit at 44.1kHz), integration with some audiobook services, a personal AI DJ, AI playlist creation tools, and the ability to connect third-party DJ software.
Additionally, the Premium Student plan has seen a jump to R47.99 per month from R37.99, offering the same features as the Standard plan.
Price Hikes Become a Recurring Theme
This announcement marks the second round of price adjustments in a short period. Back in September, the individual premium plan was increased from R64.99 to R69.99. The new Standard plan now represents a further significant leap to R94.99, effectively raising the cost of the standard ad-free experience by nearly 50% in under half a year.
Competitive Landscape Shifts
These adjustments dramatically alter Spotify’s position in the South African streaming wars. The new pricing makes it significantly more expensive than its key rival, Apple Music. Apple’s individual plan, which already includes lossless streaming, remains at R69.99 per month.
The comparison at the family level is even starker. Spotify’s Premium Platinum tier, priced at R179.99, is positioned against Apple’s Family plan, which costs R109.99. Similarly, Tidal, another service known for high-fidelity audio, charges R69.99 for its premium individual plan. For budget-conscious students, Apple’s offering is R34.99, undercutting Spotify’s revised student price.
This strategic pivot forces South African consumers to ask a critical question: are the new AI features and coveted lossless audio worth the substantial premium, or will they drive users to seek more affordable alternatives?
