Nationwide Campaign Targets Malaria Elimination by 2030

The Gambia Red Cross Society and China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) have partnered to launch a $2 million nationwide malaria elimination project, marking a significant step toward eradicating the disease in The Gambia by 2030.

Multi-Pronged Strategy Against Malaria

Launched during World Malaria Day celebrations in Brufut, the initiative focuses on:

  • Vector control measures
  • Community case management
  • Seasonal chemoprevention
  • Distribution of advanced mosquito nets
  • Public education campaigns

The project aligns with this year’s global theme: “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”

Government and International Support

Health Minister Dr. Lamin Samateh hailed the initiative as a milestone in The Gambia’s public health efforts, stating: “This project demonstrates what can be achieved when international cooperation, national leadership, and community commitment align.”

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jin reaffirmed China’s commitment: “By joining hands with IFRC, we’re helping The Gambian people move toward a malaria-free future.”

Holistic Approach to Disease Control

The comprehensive strategy includes:

  • Behavioral change communication
  • Community-level case management
  • Preventive healthcare strategies
  • Seasonal malaria chemoprevention campaigns

Gambia Red Cross President Fabakary Kalleh emphasized the project complements existing Ministry of Health efforts to eliminate malaria nationwide.

With strong government support and international partnership, this initiative represents a major advancement in The Gambia’s fight against malaria.
