Puntland to Deploy Troops to Southern Somalia in Fight Against Al-Shabaab After ISIS Operations

Puntland to Deploy Troops to Southern Somalia to Combat Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland President Saeed Abdullahi Deni announced on Saturday that the semi-autonomous region will send forces to southern Somalia to support federal military operations against Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group. The deployment will follow the completion of ongoing counter-ISIS operations in the Al-Miskad mountain range.

Commitment to National Security

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for new regional forces, Deni emphasized Puntland’s role in Somalia’s national security. He stated, “Puntland is part of Somalia. We are obliged to contribute to the defense and stabilization of the nation.” His remarks highlight the region’s willingness to assist in combating persistent insurgency despite political tensions with the federal government.

Growing Concerns Over Al-Shabaab Resurgence

The announcement comes amid rising concerns over the Somali government’s struggle to maintain control of territories reclaimed from Al-Shabaab during a 2022 military offensive. Recent months have seen the militant group retake key areas in Hiran, Middle Shabelle, and Lower Shabelle regions, exposing vulnerabilities in federal and allied forces’ hold on liberated zones.

Conditions for Political Engagement

Deni also set conditions for Puntland’s participation in the upcoming National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in May. He demanded that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud adhere to prior political agreements, stating that Puntland’s two-year absence from the NCC—a critical forum for federal and regional dialogue—would only end if Mogadishu fulfills its commitments.

Escalating Tensions with Mogadishu

Relations between Puntland and the federal government have deteriorated sharply in recent years. The regional administration accuses Mogadishu of violating the provisional constitution and enacting unilateral changes, including controversial constitutional amendments. This dispute led Puntland to withdraw recognition of President Mohamud’s authority, signaling deep political divisions.
