Joint Initiative Aims for a Cleaner, Healthier Kampala

KAMPALA, UGANDA | THE INDEPENDENT | The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and Buganda Kingdom have formed a strategic partnership to improve waste management and sanitation across Kampala. This collaboration seeks to create a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment for residents.

Community Cleanup Exercise Launches Partnership

On Saturday, KCCA Executive Director Hajjati Sharifah Buzeki led a community cleanup in Bukoto’s Mulimira Zone as part of the Weyonje Campaign (Clean and Smart City Initiative). She was joined by KCCA’s Director of Physical Planning Benon Kigenyi and Buganda Kingdom’s Minister for Community Self-Help, Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo.

During the exercise, officials:

  • Removed accumulated waste from public spaces
  • Educated residents on proper waste segregation (decomposable vs. recyclable materials)
  • Demonstrated correct use of litter bins
  • Planted trees at Bukoto Community Primary School

Sustaining Cleanliness Through Monthly Campaigns

Buzeki explained that KCCA’s Weyonje campaign organizes city-wide cleaning exercises every last Saturday of the month across different zones. She emphasized:

“Dumping waste in drainage channels disrupts sewage flow and damages the environment. We urge all residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices.”

Strengthening Enforcement and Community Engagement

The Executive Director announced plans to:

  • Inspect business premises for proper waste management systems
  • Work with KACITA leaders to ensure traders use designated waste bins

Buganda Kingdom’s Nkalubo reinforced their commitment, stating:

“This partnership allows us to amplify environmental awareness. We need stronger enforcement of cleanliness laws and community participation in reporting violators.”

Addressing Urban Challenges

Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe highlighted urgent needs:

  • Requested excavators for regular drainage maintenance
  • Noted recent flood-related fatalities in Mulimira Zone

KACITA Chairman Nagenda Musoke commended the collaboration but urged continuous attention to sanitation beyond monthly cleanups.
