A Historic Crowning on International Women’s Day

The prestigious ceremony, organized by Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI) at Kampala’s National Theatre, marked a significant milestone in Uganda’s climate resilience movement.

Meet the Multifaceted Climate Advocate

The 27-year-old titleholder describes herself as a woman of strong Christian faith, resilience, and unshakable vision. Education and Early Life

After completing her early education at Makindye Junior School and secondary education at Seeta High School and St. Mary’s Kitende, Sandra earned a government scholarship to study International Business at Makerere University Business School. However, her true calling lay elsewhere.

The Turning Point: A Climate Awakening

In October 2023, a harrowing experience on flood-prone Kinawataka Road became Sandra’s climate wake-up call. After nearly drowning in floodwaters caused by poor drainage, she immersed herself in climate research and realized environmental degradation was at the core of Uganda’s flooding crisis.

From COP28 to the Crown

Mentored by climate activist Edwin Namakanga, Sandra began attending conferences and eventually self-funded her trip to COP28, where she focused on climate inclusion. Her participation in the inaugural Miss Climate Change Awareness Uganda pageant became the perfect platform to amplify her voice.

The Pageant Journey

“I feared failure, but knew I had to try,” Sandra recalls about her pageant experience. After rigorous auditions and bootcamp training in climate advocacy and leadership, she emerged victorious – crowned as Uganda’s first climate change awareness ambassador.

A Vision for Inclusive Climate Action

As titleholder, Sandra is establishing initiatives to increase climate literacy in marginalized communities and advocating for gender-responsive policies. “I don’t want to be a ceremonial queen,” she asserts. “I’m here to spark real action.”

Breaking Stereotypes

The young activist faces challenges as a woman in environmental advocacy, combating stereotypes that equate beauty pageants with superficiality. “Activism has many faces,” she counters. “Beauty and brains can exist in the same body.”
