Fisherfolk at Nkotompo Landing Beach Celebrate Premix Fuel Supply After 60 Years

After six decades of waiting, fisherfolk at Nkotompo Landing Beach in Ghana’s Western Region are celebrating their first-ever consignment of premix fuel – a development set to transform their fishing operations.

End of a 60-Year Struggle

For generations, Nkotompo’s fishermen faced significant hardships, forced to travel to Sekondi or Shama to purchase premix fuel. This costly and time-consuming process added substantial operational expenses as they had to transport the fuel back to their community.

Chief Fisherman Expresses Relief

Nana Akomah, the Chief Fisherman of Nkotompo, described the prolonged neglect as a crippling challenge for the local fishing industry. “This neglect has hurt us for too long, but today, we see hope,” he said. “With this supply, we can finally focus on our work without the stress of searching for fuel.”

Political Leaders Hailed for Intervention

The community extended gratitude to Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Emelia Arthur and local MP Blay Armah Nyamekeye for facilitating the historic delivery. Kwamina Thompson, an NDC representative in Sekondi, emphasized this marked the beginning of sustained support: “This is not just a one-time gesture – it’s a commitment to ensure Nkotompo’s fishing industry thrives.”

A New Chapter for Nkotompo’s Fishing Industry

The fuel delivery has not only eased operational challenges but has reignited hope throughout the coastal community. Fisherfolk now anticipate increased productivity and profitability as they no longer need to allocate significant resources to fuel procurement.
