Peter Obi Urges Nigerian Leaders to Shun Corruption for National Transformation

By Kolawole Ojebisi

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has emphasized that the responsibility for Nigeria’s—and Africa’s—transformation rests squarely on its leaders. Speaking at the University of Cambridge, Obi stressed that good governance requires shunning corruption and rascality to drive meaningful development.

Leadership Accountability Key to Africa’s Progress

Obi, who shared his insights on his X handle, highlighted the need for leaders to prioritize investments in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. Drawing from his political experience, he stated:

“Nigeria, and indeed Africa, can work for all if we dismantle corruption and rascality in governance.”

Addressing African Youths at Cambridge

During the African Together Conference titled “The Making of Africa’s Future Presidents,” Obi engaged with young leaders from across the continent. He expressed optimism about their potential to drive positive change, stating:

“I was inspired by the energy and determination of these young leaders, and I remain committed to empowering them to shape Africa’s future.”

Learning from Global Success Stories

Obi cited the rapid development of nations like China, India, and Vietnam as examples of what committed leadership can achieve. He emphasized that Nigeria and Africa can replicate such success with the right governance framework.

“With competent, committed, and compassionate leadership, Nigeria can become a beacon of hope, and Africa will rise to become a global economic powerhouse.”

Call to Action for Nation-Building

Obi urged citizens to actively participate in governance by electing leaders with integrity and competence. He concluded:

“As we strive to build the New Nigeria, we all must get involved in this important process of nation-building.”
