China Pledges Support to Zambia in HIV Fight Following U.S. Aid Withdrawal
Strengthening Health Collaboration Between Nations
China has announced its readiness to assist Zambia in combating HIV following the withdrawal of aid by the United States government. The commitment was made during a meeting between Chinese Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Wang Sheng and Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata.
Initial Donation and Future Cooperation
Wang revealed that China will begin by donating 5,000 rapid HIV testing kits to Lusaka Province, with the possibility of further assistance depending on Zambia’s needs. “The donation will be made available as soon as administrative procedures are completed,” Wang stated.
The Chinese official emphasized his country’s willingness to strengthen relations with Zambia in multiple sectors, including healthcare and the provision of traditional Chinese medicine. This cooperation will be formalized through upcoming meetings between officials from Lusaka Province and China’s Sichuan Province.
Expanding Bilateral Relations
Minister Mulyata welcomed the initiative, highlighting the long-standing partnership between Zambia and China. “Our countries have collaborated successfully in infrastructure, tourism, energy, and technology sectors,” she noted.
The minister added that cooperation with China remains a top priority for President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, particularly in trade and investment. She also expressed interest in learning from China’s expertise in waste-to-energy conversion technologies.
Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements
The two nations have scheduled meetings to further discuss cooperation:
- A provincial-level meeting in Lusaka next week
- Science and technology exchange talks in Chengdu next month
“We attach great importance to the relations between Sichuan and Lusaka Provinces for economic cooperation and cultural exchanges,” Wang emphasized.
