Deadly Bomb Attack Hits Somalia’s Barawe Airstrip, Killing Two
Explosion Disrupts Airport Operations in Southern Somalia
MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least two people were killed and four others wounded on Saturday when a vehicle exploded at the airstrip in the southern Somalia coastal town of Barawe, approximately 200 km south of the capital Mogadishu, according to reports from Caasimada Online news website.
IED Attack Targets Key Transport Hub
Security sources confirmed that the blast was triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to a Toyota NOAH van. The explosion occurred shortly after the vehicle arrived at the airport’s parking area.
The targeted vehicle, reportedly owned by a local businessman, had been making routine trips to the airstrip to transport Miraa (Khat) shipments flown in from Kenya. The explosion happened moments after its arrival to collect a consignment.
Investigation Underway as Airport Shuts Down
The powerful explosion disrupted all airport operations, prompting authorities to launch an immediate investigation. The airstrip, which serves as a crucial supply point for both civilian and military operations in the Lower Shabelle region, was temporarily closed following the incident.
Al Shabaab Suspected in Latest Attack
While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, suspicion has fallen on the Islamist militant group Al Shabaab. The organization has waged a prolonged insurgency in the region and maintains an active presence around Barawe. Al Shabaab has frequently targeted government facilities and logistical hubs in similar attacks.
