Mithi Transferred to Lilongwe in the Dead of Night Following Controversial Post
Mzuzu-based social media influencer Julius Mithi was secretly transferred to Lilongwe under cover of darkness after his arrest on Tuesday, according to exclusive reports obtained by Malawi Voice Online.
Controversial Facebook Post Leads to Arrest
The arrest followed formal complaints from both the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) regarding a Facebook post where Mithi allegedly claimed over one million eligible voters had been deleted from government systems.
Nighttime Transfer Raises Questions
A confidential source revealed to Nation Online that Mithi was removed from Mzuzu Police Station late at night by officers from police headquarters in Area 30. “He was actually arrested by authorities from Headquarters [Area 30]. They are the ones who have picked him,” the source confirmed.
Police Confirm Charges
National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya verified the arrest, stating Mithi would face court within 48 hours charged with offensive communication under the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.
“This is false [what he posted], and elections are an activity that is very emotive. Anything wrong about them can plunge the country into chaos,” Kalaya emphasized, explaining the seriousness of the allegations.
Unanswered Questions Remain
Authorities have not provided any explanation for the unusual nighttime transfer, leaving many questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding Mithi’s relocation to the capital.
