Who is Trump’s Pick for US Ambassador to South Africa?
Leo Brent Bozell III was nominated on 25 March as the new US ambassador to South Africa, sparking debate about how this controversial conservative figure might navigate the already tense US-SA relations.
A Surprise Choice for Ambassador
The position became vacant when previous ambassador Reuben Brigety resigned in January. Before assuming the role, Bozell must undergo US Senate confirmation hearings.
Many analysts expected Joel Pollak, a South Africa-born editor at Breitbart News and vocal Trump supporter, to receive the nomination instead. This makes Bozell’s selection particularly noteworthy.
Bozell’s Background and Conservative Roots
Bozell is the founder and president of the Media Research Center (MRC), America’s largest media watchdog organization established in 1987. The MRC operates several conservative media outlets including CNSNews.com.
Coming from a staunchly conservative family – both his father and uncle were prominent conservative writers – Bozell’s political leanings are well-established. His son, Leo Brent Bozell IV, was involved in the 2021 US Capitol riot and received a presidential pardon from Trump earlier this year according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The 69-year-old holds a BA in history and an unspecified PhD. He founded ForAmerica in 2010 to promote “America’s founding principles” and launched an initiative in 1998 targeting Hollywood’s content standards.
Controversial Political Positions
As reported by AP News, Bozell is a vocal pro-Israel advocate, with the MRC currently displaying a “Stand With Israel” banner. This stance may complicate his diplomatic role given South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Interestingly, Politico notes Bozell initially criticized Trump during the 2016 primaries, even stating “God help this country if this man were president” on Fox News. His position reportedly shifted after these comments cost the MRC funding.
Frosty US-SA Relations
US-South Africa relations are currently at a historic low. Since returning to office, Trump has:
- Frozen aid to South Africa via executive order
- Made controversial claims about discrimination against Afrikaners
- Expelled South Africa’s ambassador Ebrahim Rasool after accusations of white supremacy
- Recently described South Africa as “a total – and very dangerous – mess” regarding Julius Malema’s Kill the Boer controversy
What This Nomination Means
Bozell’s nomination raises important questions about the future of US-SA diplomacy. His conservative background and pro-Israel stance may either:
- Further strain relations with South Africa’s current government
- Provide a direct channel to the Trump administration
- Intensify focus on media narratives between the two nations
