Tony Leon on Replacing Expelled SA Ambassador to US: “I’m Not Seeking a Job”
Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon has responded to speculation about replacing South Africa’s expelled Ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, stating he is not actively seeking the position despite being nominated by DA federal chairperson Helen Zille.
Controversial Expulsion Sparks Diplomatic Shuffle
The diplomatic post became vacant after Rasool was declared persona non grata by the US government following his criticism of America and President Donald Trump during a virtual address to the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA). His diplomatic immunities were revoked on 17 March, with orders to leave the US by 21 March.
Rasool received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Cape Town International Airport, where he addressed supporters from the ANC, SACP, and Cosatu. However, Leon criticized this display, telling eNCA: “His rally at the airport was the performance of an activist and not of an ambassador.”
Leon Criticizes SA’s Diplomatic Approach
The former ambassador to Argentina noted that Rasool’s comments violated diplomatic norms, regardless of whether the US response was justified. Leon also pointed to broader policy issues straining South Africa-US relations, particularly regarding land reform policies that prompted Trump to cut aid funding and offer refugee status to Afrikaners.
When asked about potentially taking the ambassador role, Leon chuckled and said: “I was honoured to be nominated by someone like Helen Zille but I am not seeking a job.”
Zille Advocates for Diplomatic Expertise
During a Human Rights Day commemoration, Zille emphasized the importance of the US ambassador position, stating: “We cannot afford to turn America into an enemy.” She highlighted the significant US investments in South Africa and the crucial trade relationship between the two nations.
Zille praised Leon’s qualifications: “He has been a very good ambassador before in Argentina. He has all the skills at a very top level – he’s a great intellectual, reads widely, and understands foreign policy.”
