Federal Government Opposes Live Streaming of Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial, Judge Warns Lawyer Over Social Media Conduct

FG Objects to Public Broadcast of Court Proceedings

The Federal Government has formally opposed the live streaming of court proceedings in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who faces terrorism-related charges.

Legal Team Clash Over Social Media Posts

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), representing the Federal Government, submitted a letter dated May 14 objecting to the broadcast request made by Kanu’s family. The letter also recommended banning phone use in the courtroom.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Kanu’s lead counsel, Mr. Kanu Agabi (SAN), acknowledged the objection. Awomolo criticized Aloy Ejimakor, a member of Kanu’s legal team, for allegedly posting misleading and inflammatory content on social media.

“This case is a serious matter that should not be trivialized by any lawyer,” Awomolo stated, referencing Ejimakor’s Facebook posts, which reportedly urged Biafra supporters to protest Kanu’s detention.

Judge Issues Stern Warning

Justice James Omotosho expressed strong disapproval of Ejimakor’s conduct, warning that such actions could lead to disbarment. “Ejimakor even had the audacity to post the approved list of counsel for Nnamdi Kanu on his Facebook page,” the judge remarked.

Kanu’s lead counsel apologized for the incident and assured the court it would not happen again. Justice Omotosho emphasized the need for professionalism, particularly in high-profile cases.

DSS Testifies on Independence from Political Influence

The trial proceeded with cross-examination of a DSS operative (referred to as “BBB”), who testified that the agency operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and is not subject to political interference.

The witness detailed the DSS’s intelligence-gathering methods, including human intelligence and social media monitoring, underscoring their capability to collect verified information.

Justice Omotosho reiterated his commitment to an accelerated hearing, citing Kanu’s prolonged detention.
