Updated: Moon sighted in Nigeria, Sunday is Eid-el-Fitr

The crescent moon of Shawwal 1446 AH has been sighted.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, announced this on Saturday. He congratulated Muslims on successfully completing the Ramadan fast and encouraged them to uphold the values of patience, piety, and charity beyond the holy month.

Earlier, the Sultan stated that fasting might continue on Sunday since the moon had not yet been sighted in Nigeria to mark the end of Ramadan. He emphasized that if the moon remained unseen, Eid al-Fitr would fall on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites, declared that Eid al-Fitr would begin on Sunday. “The Supreme Court has determined that tomorrow, Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr,” the Royal Court announced in a statement via the official Saudi Press Agency on X.

The timing of Eid al-Fitr follows the lunar calendar and depends on the sighting of the crescent moon. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also confirmed that the holiday would begin on Sunday, while Oman and Shiite-majority Iran announced that Eid al-Fitr would commence on Monday.
