Cameroun: Socatur Modernizes Douala’s Urban Transport with New Fleet of Air-Conditioned Buses

Douala, Cameroon – In a significant move to modernize urban transportation in Cameroon’s economic capital, Socatur S.A (Société Camerounaise de Transports Urbains) has partnered with automotive giant Tractafric Motors to introduce 15 new air-conditioned buses to Douala’s public transport network.
The official handover ceremony took place on July 7, 2025, at Tractafric Motors’ headquarters in Douala, where General Director Zouhir Rhazi presented the keys to Socatur’s General Director Lydienne Mouloby Ngalle Bihehe.
Modernizing Public Transport in Cameroon’s Economic Hub
The new fleet consists of 34-seat Fuso Rosa minibuses, each featuring spacious interiors and climate control systems. According to Tractafric Motors’ Commercial Director, “These vehicles are fuel-efficient with readily available spare parts and come with a three-year warranty.”
Economist Jules Tadjeu praised the initiative: “I commend Socatur’s management for this citizen-focused project that will reduce transportation costs from 350 FCFA to 200 FCFA. With traditional taxis becoming scarce and motorcycle taxis posing safety concerns, these new buses demonstrate the government’s responsiveness to urban mobility challenges.”
Public Reactions and Concerns

While the initiative has been widely applauded, some Douala residents have raised practical concerns. Student Félicité Mbam questioned: “Will passengers argue about air conditioning settings? Will windows be opened during transit? Can merchants board with their goods? Are pets allowed? Will 15 buses be enough to solve Douala’s transport crisis?”
Mbam added: “Given the population growth and scarcity of traditional yellow taxis, I hope Socatur will expand its fleet to serve more neighborhoods.”
Implementation and Training
Drivers have undergone specialized week-long training to operate the new vehicles. The buses will be officially unveiled to the public on July 11, 2025, at 2 PM in Douala’s economic district.
Established in 2001, Socatur succeeded the defunct Sotuc (Société de Transports Urbains du Cameroun) and has been the primary provider of urban bus services in Cameroon’s largest city.
