Moroccan Teachers Strike in Solidarity with Palestine Amid Gaza Conflict
Nationwide Protest Against Israeli Actions in Gaza
Classrooms across Morocco fell silent today as educators participated in a nationwide strike to show solidarity with Palestine. The protest, part of a global movement, condemns what organizers describe as Israel’s genocidal war against Palestinians and rejects all forms of normalization with Israel.
Education Unions Lead the Charge
Major education organizations including the National Federation of Education (Democratic Orientation) and the National University of Education Employees joined the strike. Various teacher groups, including diploma-holding educators, also participated in the demonstration.
Grassroots Participation and Last-Minute Organization
Laaroussi Touile, an English teacher from Boujdour, shared his experience: “I only saw a Facebook post late at night and decided to join.” He reported participation rates reaching 90-100% in some schools based on social media reports.
Touile emphasized the strike’s symbolic importance: “We’re sending a message that we’re not turning a blind eye to Gaza. While it doesn’t change the situation on the ground, it’s the least we can do.”
Criticism of Strike Organization
Not all educators were satisfied with the protest’s execution. Philosophy teacher Mohamed Lachheb criticized the lack of planning: “Midnight announcements show disrespect for this important action.” He argued poor communication undermined what should have been a powerful solidarity moment.
Strike Highlights Palestinian Casualties
Unions highlighted devastating statistics: over 50,000 Palestinian deaths including 17,954 children, with women and children comprising 69% of casualties. In the West Bank, nearly 1,000 Palestinians were killed and over 1,000 children arrested – violations unions called “systematic breaches of international law.”
Some groups also condemned regional governments for allegedly facilitating Israeli attacks while restricting humanitarian aid to Gaza’s two million residents.
