ECOWAS Urges Mali and Algeria to Resolve Tensions Through Diplomatic Dialogue

ECOWAS Urges Dialogue to De-escalate Mali-Algeria Tensions

Regional Bloc Calls for Diplomatic Resolution After Airspace Dispute

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong appeal for calm between Mali and Algeria following recent military tensions between the neighboring nations.

The diplomatic intervention comes after Algeria shot down a Malian drone on Sunday, prompting both countries to close their airspace to each other’s aircraft in a rapidly escalating dispute.

ECOWAS Expresses Concern Over Rising Tensions

In an official statement, the ECOWAS Commission revealed it has been monitoring the situation with growing concern. The regional body noted that recent developments affecting relations between Mali and Algeria have been documented through official communications from both governments.

“On behalf of the Member States of ECOWAS, the Commission expresses its deep concern about the situation,” the statement read. “It appeals to both Mali and Algeria to de-escalate the tension, foster dialogue, and use regional and continental mechanisms to settle differences.”

Background of the Conflict

The current tensions stem from an incident where Algerian forces intercepted and destroyed a Malian drone that allegedly entered its airspace. This military action triggered reciprocal airspace closures, significantly impacting regional aviation and diplomatic relations.

ECOWAS emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution through established diplomatic channels, urging both nations to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.
