Malawi Leader Pledges to Foster National Harmony

LILONGWE, Malawi – President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to maintaining peace and unity across Malawi, particularly as the nation prepares for upcoming elections.

The President made this commitment during a crucial meeting on April 9, 2025, with members of the National Peace and Unity Commission at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

Government’s Peace Initiative

Samson Limbani, the President’s Chief Advisor on Public Policy and Governance, emphasized Chakwera’s determination to promote peaceful coexistence among Malawians from diverse political backgrounds.

“The Head of State has rededicated himself to condemning extremism and actions that threaten peace. He remains committed to encouraging unity and constructive dialogue during these politically sensitive times,” Limbani stated.

This assurance follows growing concerns about inflammatory rhetoric at political rallies that could potentially incite violence.

Commission’s Positive Response

Mary Nkosi, Chairperson of the National Peace and Unity Commission, expressed satisfaction with the discussions, noting the President’s proactive approach to election-related peacebuilding.

“Political leaders play a pivotal role in establishing peace. This meeting initiates our planned dialogues with various stakeholders to ensure stability throughout the electoral process,” Nkosi explained.

The Commission plans to expand its peace campaign by engaging traditional leaders, including local chiefs, to reinforce messages of national unity.

Preventing Electoral Violence

President Chakwera’s peace initiative aims to safeguard Malawi’s democratic processes by preventing political extremism and maintaining social cohesion during the election period.
