Caleb Amisi Urges Kenyans to Prioritize Voter Mobilization Over IEBC Chair Selection

Saboti Constituency Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has called on Kenyans to shift focus from the selection of the next IEBC chairperson to voter mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on his official X account, the ODM lawmaker argued that the identity of the electoral commission’s chair is irrelevant when citizens achieve strong political consensus, citing Kenya’s 2002 election as proof.
Why Voter Mobilization Matters More Than IEBC Leadership
Amisi emphasized that achieving a 70% voter consensus would ensure electoral victory regardless of who leads the electoral body. He referenced the 2002 election where ECK chair Samuel Kivuitu announced Mwai Kibaki’s victory despite President Daniel Moi’s preferred candidate being on the ballot.
“Where Kenya is now, it does not matter who becomes the #IEBC chair… When Kenyans are unanimous, the winner shall be announced in broad daylight by whoever is sitting inside Bomas.”

Ongoing IEBC Recruitment Process
The remarks come as Kenya awaits the announcement of a new IEBC chairperson following the conclusion of interviews for 11 candidates. The selection panel led by Nelson Makanda completed chairperson interviews on March 26, 2025, and is now conducting interviews for commissioner positions.
Makanda confirmed all shortlisted candidates participated in the transparent recruitment process, with member interviews continuing until April 25, 2025.
