Afenyo-Markin Accuses Mahama and NDC of Disrespecting Ghana’s Constitution
NPP-Led Demonstration Demands Justice for Suspended Chief Justice
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has launched a scathing critique against President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of showing blatant disregard for Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The remarks came during a New Patriotic Party (NPP)-organized protest on Monday, May 5, which culminated in the submission of a parliamentary petition challenging the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
A Dangerous Precedent for Judicial Independence
Addressing demonstrators outside Parliament, Afenyo-Markin warned that the government’s actions threaten constitutional governance. “President Mahama and the NDC have no respect for our Constitution,” he declared, emphasizing that the suspension sets a dangerous precedent.
“This isn’t just about one individual – it’s an assault on our republic’s foundations,” the Minority Leader added, calling for vigilance against political manipulation of judicial processes.
Civil Society Joins Constitutional Defense
The demonstration united NPP supporters, civil society groups, and concerned citizens demanding:
- Transparency in executive decisions
- Strict constitutional adherence
- Immediate investigation into the Chief Justice’s suspension
The submitted petition urges Parliament to restore constitutional order, while government maintains all proper procedures were followed based on received petitions.
