Affordable Renewable Energy Solution Launches for South African Businesses

Discovery Green and Sasol Launch Ampli Energy – A Game-Changer for South African Businesses

Discovery Green, a subsidiary of Discovery Limited, has partnered with energy giant Sasol to introduce Ampli Energy – an innovative month-to-month renewable energy solution for South African businesses.

Revolutionizing Business Energy Consumption

Ampli Energy provides immediate access to green energy through the national grid, offering:

  • No upfront costs or installations required
  • Flexible, penalty-free cancellation
  • Monthly savings on electricity bills
  • Monthly cashback incentives

Andre Nepgen, Head of Discovery Green, explained: “While solar technology has helped many businesses, most lack the capital and space for on-site installations to meet their full energy needs.”

How Wheeling Technology Enables Green Energy Access

The solution leverages wheeling technology, where electricity is generated at remote wind and solar farms and delivered through existing grid infrastructure. This approach:

  • Eliminates need for additional infrastructure
  • Makes renewable energy accessible to businesses of all sizes
  • Reduces carbon emissions without capital investment

Breaking Down Barriers to Green Energy

Previously, long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) were only feasible for large energy users like mines. Ampli Energy changes this by offering:

  • Simple month-to-month membership
  • No long-term contracts
  • Access to 450 MWh annual renewable capacity (R1.8-R2.5 billion investment)

Sasol’s Sarushen Pillay noted: “This marks our strategic shift from energy consumer to renewable energy aggregator and trader.”

Early Adoption and Future Growth

The first tranche is already fully subscribed by notable organizations including:

  • Nando’s
  • NetFlorist
  • Hatfield Motors
  • Selected Sasol garages
  • NGOs like Reach for a Dream and Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital
