AfriForum Calls for International Sanctions Against Julius Malema
Lobby group AfriForum has launched a campaign seeking international sanctions against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema following the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of their appeal regarding the controversial “Kill the Boer” chant.
Why AfriForum Wants Sanctions Against Julius Malema
AfriForum leader Kallie Kriel announced in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the organization is petitioning foreign governments to take punitive action against Malema and others who chant the controversial phrase.
“We are requesting governments to use diplomatic channels to pressure the South African government to unconditionally condemn calls for violence against Afrikaners and farmers,” Kriel stated.
The group plans to distribute a legal dossier detailing three key allegations against Malema:
- Human rights violations
- Support for terrorist organizations
- Serious corruption accusations
Constitutional Court Upholds Ruling on Controversial Chant
The move comes days after South Africa’s highest court upheld previous rulings that the struggle song doesn’t constitute hate speech. The EFF celebrated the decision, calling AfriForum’s legal challenge “a frivolous attempt to weaponize the legal system to distort history.”
The party accused AfriForum of promoting “false narratives of white victimhood” while ignoring the ongoing effects of apartheid-era oppression faced by Black South Africans.
Elon Musk’s Previous Calls for Action
This isn’t the first international call for action against Malema. In February 2024, tech billionaire Elon Musk took to X to:
- Label Malema “an international criminal”
- Question President Ramaphosa’s inaction
- Call for sanctions against the EFF leader
Musk specifically referenced what he characterized as “calls for the genocide of white people” in his posts.
