Historic Nomination for World Heritage Recognition

Algeria is set to propose the royal tombs of Numidia for UNESCO World Heritage status as early as next year, announced Culture and Arts Minister Zouhir Ballalou. These ancient funerary monuments, dating back to the Numidian period, represent a significant chapter in North African history.

Key Sites Across Algeria

The nomination includes important locations across multiple provinces:

Comprehensive Cultural Preservation Strategy

Minister Ballalou revealed that the Numidian tombs are among 11 sites proposed for UNESCO’s Tentative List as part of a five-year action plan (2025-2029). The strategy aims to classify cultural, natural, and mixed heritage sites while addressing Algeria’s rich intangible heritage.

Intangible Heritage Initiatives

Recent submissions for intangible heritage recognition include:

  • Traditional Kabyle clothing and jewelry craftsmanship
  • Zellij tilework artistry

Additional files being prepared feature Karakou, Oran’s blouza, and Laalaoui traditions.

Sustainable Heritage Management

The minister emphasized a new approach to heritage site management focused on:

  • Developing cultural and creative industries
  • Enhancing visitor services
  • Generating sustainable revenue streams

Kasbah of Algiers Restoration

Restoration work continues at the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Algiers, with progress reported on key landmarks including the Citadel, Dar El Hamra, and Dar El Kadi. These sites are expected to reopen to the public upon completion.

National Archaeological Preservation

Algeria’s archaeological map currently identifies:

  • 1,080 historical sites
  • 25 protected sectors with Safeguarding Plans

Film Industry Development

In related cultural news, 16 implementing texts for the 2024 film industry law are in preparation. These regulations aim to stimulate private investment in film production infrastructure, including studios and post-production facilities.
