Beyond the Bonus: How MoMo Rwanda’s Holiday Cashback Drives Digital Adoption and Financial Inclusion

Kigali, Rwanda – December 1, 2025 – In a strategic move to accelerate digital payment adoption, Mobile Money Rwanda Ltd (MoMo Rwanda) has launched a targeted holiday promotion. The initiative offers MoMoApp customers a 5% cashback reward on their first five distinct purchases made via MoMoPay within a single day. This campaign, running until December 31st, 2025, is more than a seasonal gift; it’s a calculated effort to reshape consumer behavior during the high-spending festive period.

The mechanics are designed for both simplicity and habit formation: customers must make payments to five different MoMoPay merchants in one day to qualify. The 5% cashback is then automatically credited, providing an instant, tangible benefit. This structure intentionally encourages exploration of the merchant network and repeated use, moving beyond a one-time transaction.

Chantal Kagame, CEO of MoMo Rwanda, contextualized the initiative: “Our goal is for every smartphone user in Rwanda to experience the seamlessness of the MoMoApp. This cashback reward serves a dual purpose: it provides immediate value to the customer while strategically incentivizing the development of digital payment habits. The festive season, with its increased commerce and social spending, presents the perfect behavioral window to make this shift.”

This promotion leverages a powerful principle in behavioral economics: loss aversion, framed as a gain. By offering cashback, MoMo makes trying the new system feel rewarding rather than risky. For the Rwandan digital economy, such campaigns are crucial. They lower the psychological barrier to entry for new users and increase transaction velocity among existing ones, directly contributing to the ecosystem’s vitality.

The MoMoApp itself is a comprehensive financial platform. Beyond merchant payments (MoMoPay), it enables users to send and receive money, pay utility bills, transfer funds to and from bank accounts, access international remittance services, and manage loans and savings through MoKash. This holiday push on MoMoPay is a funnel to introduce users to this broader suite of financial tools, all managed from one secure application.

As the year concludes, MoMo Rwanda extends its gratitude to its customers and partners. The company’s growth—with a vast subscriber base, over 65,000 agents, and tens of thousands of MoMoPay merchants—highlights its pivotal role in Rwanda’s financial landscape. Through continuous innovation in payments, savings, credit (MoKash), and transport (Tap&Go), MoMo Rwanda is not just a service provider but a key infrastructure player driving financial inclusion and formalizing the digital economy.
