Nationwide Celebrations Highlight Unity and Military Cooperation

Cameroon marked its 53rd National Day on Tuesday with grand military and civilian parades across the country. President Paul Biya presided over the main ceremony in the capital Yaoundé, where hundreds of soldiers and civilians marched before national and international dignitaries.

Nigerian Military Participation Strengthens Bilateral Ties

A notable highlight was the participation of a contingent from the Nigerian Armed Forces, signaling deepening military cooperation between the two neighboring nations. Cameroon Army spokesperson Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo emphasized the strong bilateral relationship, stating, “Cameroon and Nigeria have excellent relations as neighbors. We collaborate in several military aspects to fight terrorism, especially against Boko Haram.”

Guemo added, “The presence of the Nigerian army during this important day in Cameroon demonstrates the cordial relationship between our countries.”

Celebrations Amid Security Challenges

Despite security concerns, celebrations took place in all 10 regions of Cameroon, including the conflict-affected Anglophone areas. Separatist fighters had attempted to disrupt the events with a lockdown, but local authorities reported that clashes in Bambili, Northwest Region, did not prevent the parades from proceeding.

Historical Significance of May 20

May 20 holds special significance in Cameroon’s history, commemorating the 1972 referendum when citizens voted to transition from a federal system to a unitary state. The annual celebrations serve as a reminder of national unity and sovereignty.
