9 Killed, 4 Wounded in Separate Attacks in Abyei Region

AWEIL — At least nine people have been killed and four wounded in separate deadly attacks within the disputed Abyei Special Administrative Area, officials reported on Sunday.
Details of the Attacks
Abyei Special Administrative Area Information Minister Yuana Akol Ngor confirmed to Sudans Post that armed youth from Twic County in Warrap State, allegedly supported by controversial Nuer spiritual leader Gai Mchiek, carried out coordinated attacks on April 4 and 6.
“The first attack occurred on April 4, where four charcoal makers were killed and others wounded,” Akol stated. “On Sunday, April 6, further attacks targeted Majak-Maan-Nyuar, Dongop, and Lou villages, resulting in additional casualties.”
Escalating Violence and Displacement
The minister described the situation as a “bad onslaught,” with multiple casualties reported. He emphasized that the attackers were allied forces from Twic County and followers of Gai Machiek, though exact casualty figures remain unclear as reports continue to emerge.
“As I speak, I’m still in the field gathering information,” Akol said. “The situation remains tense, and many have been displaced by these attacks.”
Unclear Motives and Calls for Accountability
While the exact motive behind the attacks remains unknown, Akol suggested longstanding tensions between Twic, Unity, and Abyei communities may be a contributing factor. “Many believe this is revenge-driven violence fueled by implanted hatred between these communities,” he explained.
The minister called on Twic County authorities to hold Gai Machiek and the involved youth accountable for the killings. Attempts to obtain comments from Warrap State officials regarding the attacks were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
