Defence Minister Shifts Stance, Endorses National Assembly’s Security Summit

Defence Minister Reverses Stance, Backs National Assembly’s Security Summit

In a notable policy shift, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has endorsed the National Assembly’s proposed national security summit, describing it as a “timely initiative to address the country’s escalating security challenges.”

Minister Commits to Active Participation

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Badaru pledged his full support for the two-day summit, vowing to ensure its recommendations translate into concrete actions. “When you hold a summit, you gather diverse perspectives to strengthen strategies and drive meaningful change,” he emphasized.

From Skepticism to Support

This endorsement marks a dramatic reversal from Badaru’s position last Wednesday when he downplayed the summit’s value during an inter-ministerial briefing. At that time, he questioned claims that insurgents possess superior weaponry compared to Nigeria’s military forces.

Senate’s Response and Minister’s New Approach

The Senate had strongly criticized Badaru’s initial remarks, warning against statements that could strain executive-legislative relations. Now adopting a more conciliatory tone, the Defence Minister acknowledged the importance of inclusive dialogue in tackling Nigeria’s complex security situation.

“I will actively participate in the summit and ensure its outcomes lead to tangible results. This represents commendable progress toward inclusive policymaking,” Badaru stated.

Heightened Expectations for Summit

With the Defence Minister’s newfound support, expectations are rising that the security summit will mark a significant step in coordinating national efforts against insecurity.
