Edo Governor Denies N6 Billion Compensation to Terrorist Group
Governor Okpebholo Refutes IPOB’s Allegations
Benin, Nigeria – Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has firmly denied authorizing any N6 billion compensation payment to groups in the state, dismissing claims by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as false and malicious.
Statement from Government House
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, issued a statement on Thursday clarifying that the administration has never approved such payments to any group, particularly not to organizations linked to terrorism.
“These allegations are fictitious, malicious, and deliberately misleading,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “This is a calculated attempt to distort facts, sow ethnic division, and destabilize our peaceful state.”
IPOB’s Controversial Claims
The governor was responding to IPOB’s publication accusing his administration of allocating funds to “compensate terrorists” and allegedly betraying Edo residents. The separatist group, designated as a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government, has been known for its controversial statements and activities.
Okpebholo emphasized that Edo State maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and criminal activities. “The Edo government has never and will never compensate individuals or groups involved in terrorism or criminal acts,” he affirmed.
Commitment to Peace and Security
The governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to maintaining peace and security across Edo State. He described IPOB’s allegations as part of a pattern of falsehoods designed to incite ethnic tensions.
“Edo residents are renowned for peace, unity, and hospitality,” Okpebholo stated. “We reject IPOB’s dangerous rhetoric and attempts to destabilize our harmonious coexistence.”
Call for Investigation
The governor urged security agencies to investigate the source of what he called “inciteful propaganda,” warning against groups that manipulate facts for political gains.
“No group should be allowed to endanger public peace or spread misinformation,” he said, assuring residents that his administration remains focused on inclusive development and security for all law-abiding citizens.
