EFCC Denies Giving Reason for VeryDarkMan’s Arrest, Calls Reports “Fake News”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports that it provided reasons for arresting controversial social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
EFCC Refutes Earlier Media Reports
In a tweet on Monday, May 5, the anti-graft agency dismissed as “fake news” earlier media reports that quoted its spokesperson Dele Oyewale stating VDM was arrested due to multiple petitions against him.
The BBC had reported that Oyewale claimed the activist was detained to respond to allegations from various petitioners, with the EFCC promising to release him once bail conditions were met.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” the BBC quoted Oyewale as saying.
Growing Outcry Over Arrest
The arrest has sparked widespread condemnation, with protests erupting in Abuja demanding VDM’s release. Prominent political figures including former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (Labour Party) have criticized the detention.
Lawyer Raises Concerns Over Treatment
VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has expressed concerns about his client’s treatment, alleging the activist was denied food while in EFCC custody. In a passionate tweet, Adeyanju stated:
“VDM was arrested by the police at GTB today. He spoke to the officers before being taken into custody. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime.”
Public Reaction
The case has generated significant public interest, with many Nigerians questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest. Some supporters have taken symbolic actions, including a Catholic priest who reportedly withdrew his money from GTBank in protest.
As the situation develops, Nigerians await further clarification from authorities regarding the legal basis for VDM’s continued detention.
