Essa Faal Pledges to Replace Foreign Security at State House with Gambian Soldiers

Presidential Candidate Vows to Prioritize National Security Forces
Gambian lawyer and 2026 presidential hopeful Essa Faal has made a bold commitment to replace foreign security personnel at the State House with Gambian soldiers if elected. This announcement comes as part of his vision to strengthen national sovereignty and trust in Gambia’s armed forces.
Ending Foreign Security Presence
Foreign troops have guarded the Gambian presidency since 2017, following the departure of former President Yahya Jammeh. Faal criticized this arrangement during an appearance on Coffee Time, arguing that it undermines the capabilities and role of Gambia’s military.
“From day one, I will have Gambian forces around me,” Faal declared. “If Gambians deem me worthy of being elected president, I will trust them with my life. I will not run, cower, or hide behind foreign forces.”
Expressing Confidence in National Forces
The former lead counsel for the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission described Gambian soldiers as “the most loyal Gambians,” emphasizing their commitment to national protection. Faal recently left his position at the International Criminal Court to focus on his political ambitions in Gambia.
“I do not believe anyone can claim greater loyalty to this country than the members of the armed forces,” Faal stated. “They are the ones who choose to wear the uniform and carry the gun for one purpose: to protect our country, even if it means dying for it.”
A Vision for National Security
Faal’s proposal represents a significant shift in presidential security policy, emphasizing national self-reliance and confidence in Gambian institutions. His statements have sparked discussions about the role of foreign security forces in post-Jammeh Gambia.
The presidential candidate concluded: “So, I trust them, I love them, and I would be honoured to be their commander-in-chief.”
