Ethiopia and Djibouti Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through High-Level Diplomatic Talks
Foreign Ministers Discuss Strategic Partnership and Regional Cooperation
Addis Ababa – Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, held high-level discussions with Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Abdoulkader Houssein Omar, to reinforce bilateral relations between the two nations.
Deepening Diplomatic and Economic Relations
The ministers engaged in productive talks covering key bilateral and regional matters, focusing on strengthening the longstanding partnership between Ethiopia and Djibouti. FM Gedion highlighted the significance of Ambassador Omar’s visit, marking his first official international trip since assuming office, as a testament to the importance both countries place on their diplomatic ties.
“Our relationship with Djibouti extends far beyond geographical proximity,” stated FM Gedion. “It represents a strategic, multifaceted partnership spanning numerous sectors including trade, infrastructure, and regional security.”
Shared Vision for Enhanced Cooperation
The Ethiopian Foreign Minister emphasized the need for closer collaboration to elevate bilateral relations, particularly in:
- Economic development and trade expansion
- Regional integration initiatives
- Citizen welfare and cross-border cooperation
In response, Djibouti’s FM Omar acknowledged the deep historical and cultural bonds between the nations, stating: “Our partnership is built on shared language, religion, and economic interdependence. We are committed to further deepening this strategic alliance.”
Commitment to Regional Stability
Both ministers affirmed their joint commitment to strengthening the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), underscoring their shared vision for regional peace and economic progress in the Horn of Africa.
