Female Journalists Key to Combating Insecurity, Says FCT Minister

Minister Praises Women Journalists’ Role in National Security

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has described female journalists as critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity, emphasizing their unique ability to shape narratives and promote national unity.

Speaking at the inaugural zonal conference of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Abuja, themed “Curbing Insecurity: The Role of Female Journalists in National Security,” Dr. Mahmoud highlighted the importance of the gathering for advancing ethical and inclusive journalism in Nigeria.

Addressing Security Challenges Through Journalism

With Nigeria grappling with terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, and misinformation, the minister stressed the influential role women journalists play in amplifying marginalized voices and fostering unity.

“As women, professionals, and storytellers, you hold a unique position in shaping narratives, amplifying the voices of the vulnerable, and fostering national unity. You are often the voice for the voiceless and a beacon of hope in communities affected by violence,” she said.

She also acknowledged the challenges female journalists face, including safety risks, gender-based harassment, and underrepresentation in leadership roles, urging collective action to address these issues.

FCT’s Security Measures

Dr. Mahmoud outlined key security initiatives by the FCT Administration under Minister Nyesom Wike, such as:

  • Enhanced inter-agency collaboration
  • Advanced surveillance technology
  • Infrastructure improvements including street lighting and road rehabilitation

NAWOJ’s Contribution to Security Reporting

NAWOJ Zone D Vice President, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, highlighted how female journalists have exposed critical security threats, including Boko Haram activities and human rights violations.

“Their storytelling brings balance and diversity to security coverage, ensuring more inclusive national conversations,” Ogbeche stated.

The conference brought together delegates from across Nigeria’s North-Central region to discuss media, gender, and national security issues.
