High-Stakes Primaries Underway in Kasungu South
Malawi’s Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Kasungu South, Simplex Chithyola, is facing a crucial political test as he competes against fellow Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidates in the party’s primary elections.
The high-stakes primaries are currently taking place at Chigodi Community Stadium in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nsanthe, with over 2,000 voters expected to participate in the democratic process.
Chithyola’s Challengers
The Finance Minister faces competition from two party members:
- Joseph Manguluti
- Vassco Mtunduwatha Chimbalu

Second Political Challenge for Minister
This marks the second time Chithyola has faced internal party competition. The Finance Minister previously contested for the position of Secretary General during the MCP convention, losing to current officeholder Chimwendo Banda.
The outcome of these primaries will determine whether Chithyola retains the party’s nomination to defend his Kasungu South parliamentary seat in upcoming national elections.
