France Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara
French Officials Reinforce Stance on Moroccan Autonomy Plan
Paris, France – French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot has reiterated France’s firm position supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara region. The declaration was made during a hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly.
“The present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as a direct consequence of the Moroccan autonomy plan,” Barrot stated. He emphasized that no other realistic or credible solutions currently exist.
UN-Backed Political Solution
Barrot highlighted that France supports a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution under the United Nations framework. “We back UN efforts towards this dialogue,” he added, noting that he would soon discuss the matter with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Paris.
Macron’s Consistent Position
French President Emmanuel Macron has consistently reinforced this stance. In July 2024, Macron conveyed in a message to King Mohammed VI that France considers Western Sahara’s future tied to Moroccan sovereignty.
Macron described this as an “unwavering position” crucial to Morocco’s national security, pledging that France would uphold this stance both domestically and internationally.
Historic Address in Moroccan Parliament
During his state visit to Morocco on October 29, Macron reiterated this position in a historic speech before the Moroccan Parliament. “For France, the present and future of this territory lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” he declared.
Macron stressed that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty remains the only viable resolution to the Western Sahara issue.
