Gambian Activists Arrested for Protesting Secrecy in Sale of Ex-President Jammeh’s Assets

Gambian Police Detain Over 16 Activists Demanding Transparency in Jammeh’s Seized Assets

Youth Protesters Arrested in Banjul Over Unauthorized Demonstration

By Nelson Manneh

More than 16 youth activists were arrested and briefly detained by Gambian police in Banjul on Sunday after attempting to protest the government’s handling of assets seized from former President Yahya Jammeh.

Protest Against Alleged Corruption in Asset Disposal

The arrests occurred at Arch 22, where members of Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) gathered despite being denied a protest permit. The group demanded full disclosure of Jammeh’s forfeited properties, including sale terms and buyer identities.

“If the Government cannot disclose the full list of Jammeh’s assets, it suggests their involvement in unlawful sales,” one protester told Foroyaa newspaper.

Investigation Sparks Public Outcry

The demonstration followed an explosive report by The Republic titled “The Assets of Gambia’s Former Dictator Go for a Song,” alleging assets were sold below market value to government officials and associates.

Police confirmed arresting “more than 16 individuals” linked to the unauthorized protest, noting protesters refused to disclose their identities during questioning.

Five Key Demands in Formal Petition

The activists planned to deliver a petition titled “Urgent Call for Transparency and Accountability in the Sale of Former President Yahya Jammeh’s Assets,” invoking constitutional rights and demanding:

  1. Full disclosure of all forfeited assets and sale details
  2. Transparency in proceeds allocation
  3. Independent oversight body creation
  4. Withdrawal of former Justice Minister’s ICC nomination
  5. Public address by President Barrow

National Debate on Transitional Justice

The petition warns the opaque process “threatens to undermine public trust,” calling it a pivotal test for Gambia’s democratic ideals. As of Thursday, detainees reportedly remained in custody.
