Gambian Govt Sends Envoy to Mauritania Over Alleged Abuse of Gambian Migrants
BANJUL – The Gambian government has taken diplomatic action by dispatching Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara to Mauritania following disturbing reports of alleged abuse against Gambian migrants by Mauritanian security forces.
Diplomatic Response to Migrant Concerns
The government has strongly condemned the reported incidents and initiated high-level discussions with Mauritanian authorities to address the situation and ensure the protection of Gambian citizens abroad.
“In light of this, and in consideration of the strong bilateral ties between The Gambia and Mauritania, His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, has today dispatched His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara as a Special Envoy,” stated an official government release.
Strengthening Consular Support
The Gambian Embassy in Nouakchott has been directed to:
- Intensify engagement with Mauritanian authorities
- Strengthen community outreach with Gambian migrants
- Enhance protection mechanisms for citizens
The government urged all Gambians in Mauritania to register with their embassy, stating: “All Gambians residing in Mauritania are urged to register their presence with the Gambian Embassy in Nouakchott to facilitate effective and timely communication.”
Protecting Bilateral Relations
This diplomatic mission aims to resolve the migrant protection issues while preserving the strong relationship between the two West African nations. The envoy will meet directly with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to discuss the matter at the highest level.
