Gerda Steyn Makes History with Sixth Straight Two Oceans Marathon Victory
Dominant Performance Secures Another Title for South African Running Star
Gerda Steyn cemented her legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest distance runners by winning her sixth consecutive Two Oceans Marathon title on Saturday. The Hollywood Athletics Club athlete crossed the finish line at UCT rugby fields in an impressive time of 3:29:11, leading the race from start to finish.
“A Blessing to Use My Talent”
Speaking after her historic win, an emotional Steyn said: “I am so proud to be here and be able to use my God-given talent. To enjoy running the way that I do is nothing but a blessing. I’m thankful for how today played out.”
The champion runner revealed her winning strategy: “I planned to go faster in the first half – about a minute quicker than last year. That’s a big improvement, and I executed perfectly.”
Record Bonus Not the Priority
Despite a R250,000 incentive for breaking the course record, Steyn emphasized that making history with a sixth straight victory was her main focus.
“This was 100% successful. You can’t always break records,” Steyn explained. “A sixth consecutive win is a perfect 10 out of 10 for me. Opening an early gap gave me confidence and motivation throughout the race.”
Overwhelming Crowd Support
The race confirmed Steyn’s status as South Africa’s running darling, with spectators cheering her every step.
“The support was incredible – from the first kilometer to the last, it was just ‘Go, Gerda, Go!'” she said. “I hope my performance today repaid even a fraction of that amazing energy.”
