Ghana Aims to Lead Africa in Aluminum Production with Government Backing
Minister Pledges Full Support for Integrated Aluminium Industry
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC). During a meeting with GIADEC’s management in Accra on April 10, 2025, the minister emphasized plans to transform Ghana into a continental leader in aluminum production.
Government Commits to Overcoming Industry Challenges
“My Ministry will facilitate strategic decisions to position Ghana as a leader in aluminum production,” Minister Buah stated. He acknowledged existing sector bottlenecks but assured full government support: “We are fully aware of the challenges and will walk every step with you, engaging all relevant institutions.”
The minister specifically promised to expedite financial and administrative approvals for critical infrastructure projects, including railway development to support the aluminum industry.
GIADEC’s Ambitious Master Plan
GIADEC CEO Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah presented the corporation’s comprehensive strategy to establish Africa’s first fully integrated aluminum value chain – from bauxite mining to refining and smelting.
“While several African nations have bauxite deposits, none has achieved full integration of the aluminum value chain. Our goal is to make Ghana the first,” Ankrah explained.
Ghana’s Competitive Advantage
Ghana boasts approximately 900 million tonnes of bauxite reserves across three major deposits:
- Awaso: 60 million tonnes
- Nyinahini: 700 million tonnes
- Kyebi: 160 million tonnes
This substantial resource base positions Ghana favorably in the global aluminum market and supports the government’s industrialization agenda.
