Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni Denies Joining Atiku’s Opposition Coalition
Governor Rejects Rumors of Defection to PDP
Damaturu, Nigeria – Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has firmly denied rumors of his planned defection to the opposition coalition led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
In an official statement released on Saturday by his spokesman Mamman Mohammed, Governor Buni dismissed the viral claims as “baseless fabrications” and “unwarranted imagination.”
Viral Message Sparks Political Speculation
The controversy began when a text message circulated claiming Governor Buni and four other APC governors were preparing to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed strongly refuted these allegations, stating: “At no time was the author of the text ever close to the governor to think he could predict the governor’s political movement.”
Governor’s Strong APC Ties
The spokesman emphasized Governor Buni’s deep roots in the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying:
“Buni is no ordinary member of APC; he is not just an APC governor. He is APC in all ramifications, with APC flowing in his veins.”
Mohammed highlighted the governor’s significant contributions to the party, including serving as two-term National Secretary and National Chairman who chaired the party’s convention committee.
Political Motivation Behind Rumors
The statement suggested the rumors might stem from political envy, noting:
“The author and his paymasters must have been interested in Buni’s political sagacity and only wished they would have the likes of the governor. It must be wishful thinking.”
The governor’s office maintains these claims have no basis in reality and represent pure speculation about Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
