UN Chief Urges Global Action to End Sudan’s Brutal War
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a powerful appeal for renewed international focus on ending Sudan’s devastating conflict, marking two years since the war began between government forces and paramilitary groups.

A Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding
The UN chief described a crisis of “staggering proportions” where civilians bear the heaviest burden:
- Nearly 12 million displaced – the world’s largest displacement crisis
- Over 30 million needing humanitarian assistance
- 25 million facing acute hunger, with famine emerging in multiple locations
- 90+ aid workers killed since conflict began
“The world must not forget the people of Sudan. We must renew our focus on finding an end to this brutal war.”
António Guterres, UN Secretary-General
Systematic Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure
Guterres detailed alarming patterns of violence:
- Indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes targeting markets, hospitals, and schools
- Rampant sexual violence against women and girls
- Collapse of basic services – only 25% of health facilities functional in hardest-hit areas
Call for Immediate Action
The Secretary-General demanded:
- End to external weapons flows fueling the conflict
- Implementation of Jeddah Declaration commitments to protect civilians
- Independent investigations into human rights violations
- Revitalized political efforts to prevent Sudan’s fragmentation
UN’s Ongoing Commitment
The organization continues prioritizing Sudan through:
- Personal Envoy Ramtane Lamamra’s mediation efforts
- Coordination with regional leaders
- Support for Sudanese civilians developing post-conflict vision
Despite reaching 15.6 million people with aid in 2023, Guterres warned that funding cuts and security challenges severely limit humanitarian response.
