Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail 2025: A Race for Nature, Culture, and Community

Fourth Edition Promises Unique Blend of Sports and Local Development

The fourth edition of the Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT) is set to deliver an unforgettable experience combining nature, culture, and community in Morocco’s majestic High Atlas Mountains. Scheduled for May 3-4, 2025, the event will traverse through picturesque villages and the stunning Toubkal National Park, Morocco’s highest natural reserve.

New Features for 2025 Edition

This year’s HAUT introduces two significant additions:

  • A timed cadets and juniors race to nurture young athletic talent
  • A medical caravan providing healthcare services in Assif Zagrawen on April 19-20

“We’ve added a medical caravan and youth race to support young runners’ growth,” said event director Kaoutar Bendoumou in an interview with Morocco World News.

Cultural Preservation and Economic Impact

The event strongly focuses on local development, with:

  • Handmade Amazigh carpets awarded to winners
  • Local product exhibitions supporting small producers
  • Employment opportunities for residents in logistics and hospitality

Increasing Female Participation

Women now comprise 40% of participants, up from 30% last year, thanks to the SHE RUN initiative. Organizers aim to further promote gender equality in endurance sports.

Success Stories: From Local to International

Youssef Ait Meskouk, last year’s 42 km winner from Imlil, shared his journey: “Before, we didn’t know what trail running was. Now, through HAUT, we train and compete internationally.”

The event’s partnership with the Swiss Embassy continues, offering top winners international competition opportunities in Switzerland.

Environmental Commitment

HAUT maintains its eco-friendly approach through the ITRA Green Commitment Program, focusing on:

  • Waste reduction
  • Local employment
  • Sustainable practices
