Human Rights Group Condemns Aerial Bombardment in Old Fangak, South Sudan

SSIAHR Issues Strong Condemnation of Civilian Targeting
May 5, 2025 – The South Sudan International Advocacy for Human Rights (SSIAHR) has issued a strong condemnation of the May 3, 2025 aerial bombardment in Old Fangak, Jonglei State. The attack, allegedly conducted by joint forces of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), targeted civilian areas and a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health facility.
Violation of International Humanitarian Law
The human rights organization describes the attack as a grave violation of the Geneva Conventions, which strictly prohibit attacks on civilians and medical facilities. SSIAHR emphasizes that targeting vulnerable populations and humanitarian infrastructure is both morally reprehensible and legally unjustifiable.
Escalating Ethnic Violence Concerns
The statement highlights growing concerns about the normalization of violence against the Nuer ethnic group, with state military resources being repeatedly deployed against civilian populations along ethnic lines. These actions are reported to be worsening humanitarian conditions and undermining peace efforts across South Sudan.
Calls for International Action
SSIAHR is urging:
- Immediate investigation by the UN, African Union, and human rights bodies
- Accountability for those responsible
- Cessation of hostilities
- Unrestricted humanitarian access
- Protection for civilians and medical personnel
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to justice and peace in South Sudan, standing in solidarity with the victims of the attack.
