Kano State Secures $10 Billion Morocco Deal for Renewable Energy and Minerals Investment
Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has announced a landmark partnership with Moroccan companies that is projected to attract over $10 billion in investments for renewable energy and solid minerals development over the next five years.
Strategic MoUs to Boost Economic Growth
According to a statement released by Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, media aide to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state is preparing to sign multiple investment Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Kingdom of Morocco. These agreements will focus on three key sectors: renewable energy, agriculture, and commerce.
The announcement follows a high-level investment mission to Morocco led by Governor Yusuf, where the delegation engaged with prominent Moroccan institutions including:
- Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development
- Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN)
- Moroccan Agency for Africa (OCP Africa)
- Casablanca Chamber of Commerce
Technology Transfer and Industrial Development
The partnerships will explore critical areas including investor identification, financing models, and advanced technologies for energy storage and distribution – particularly for industrial applications in Kano. The Casablanca Chamber of Commerce, recognized as one of Africa’s leading private sector platforms, has expressed strong interest in collaborating on renewable energy and solid minerals projects.
“This partnership is expected to boost the state’s economy and contribute to attracting up to $10 billion in investments over five years, aligning with our strategic investment plan,” Dawakin-Tofa stated.
Agricultural Advancements Through OCP Partnership
The delegation’s meeting with OCP Africa, one of the world’s largest fertilizer producers, yielded promising agricultural development proposals. These include:
- Establishment of fertilizer blending plants
- Implementation of advanced supply chain systems
- Support programs for smallholder farmers using modern technologies
Solar Energy Expansion with MASEN Support
A significant outcome of the visit was the proposed collaboration with MASEN, which manages Africa’s largest solar power plant in Ouarzazate (500MW capacity). MASEN has committed to providing technical expertise for Kano’s ambitious “Light-Up Kano Initiative,” which aims to generate 2,000 megawatts of solar energy within five years.
This series of partnerships marks a major step in Kano’s strategy to accelerate industrial growth, transition to clean energy, and promote sustainable agricultural development through international cooperation.
