Kenya Government Pledges to Finish Stalled Stadium Projects to Boost Sports Talent

Government Commits to Complete Construction of Stalled Stadia Nationwide

Infrastructure Development Key to Talent Growth

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to complete stalled stadium projects across the country, emphasizing their crucial role in talent identification and development. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya made the announcement during the official handover ceremony at Talanta Plaza between outgoing Principal Secretary Peter Tum and incoming PS Elijah Mwangi.

Government’s Sports Infrastructure Plan

“As a government, we are committed to resolving all challenges related to sports infrastructure across the country,” stated CS Mvurya. “We will be actively engaging stakeholders nationwide to fast-track these projects and create opportunities for grassroots talent mobilization.”

The Cabinet Secretary highlighted the parallel development of 37 sports academies under the Kenya Academy of Sports, designed to identify and nurture young athletes across various disciplines. “We must harness talent at an early stage,” Mvurya emphasized. “By admitting youth into these academies early, we can develop them to their full potential.”

Warning to Sports Federations

Mvurya issued a stern warning to non-compliant sports federations: “All sports federations must operate with transparency, accountability, and adherence to the law, especially regarding government funding. We will not allow opaque operations that risk the future of our young athletes.”

Leadership Transition

The ceremony also marked the transition of leadership, with Mvurya commending outgoing PS Peter Tum for his contributions. “Eng. Tum has positioned Kenya on the path to becoming a regional and international sporting powerhouse,” he remarked. Tum, now appointed as Ambassador to DR Congo, reflected on Kenya’s sports sector achievements during his tenure.

Sports is a powerful economic enabler, and we will ensure our youth can monetize their talents effectively.” Mvurya expressed confidence in Mwangi’s ability to continue driving growth in the sector.
