Kenya Pays Ksh 1.6 Billion to CAF for 2025 Africa Nation Championship Hosting
Government Confirms Payment as East Africa Prepares for Major Football Event
NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya has officially secured its role as co-host for the 2025 Africa Nation Championship (CHAN) after the government fulfilled its financial obligations to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the payment of Ksh 1.6 billion (approximately $12 million) during a parliamentary session with the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture. This crucial step ensures Kenya’s participation as one of three host nations for the prestigious tournament.
Sports Infrastructure Development Accelerates
In addition to the CHAN preparations, Mvurya revealed ambitious plans for sports infrastructure development across Kenya. The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has committed to constructing 37 Sports Academies nationwide, with contracts already signed with 27 contractors. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2025.
Tournament Details and Regional Significance
The 2025 CHAN tournament, exclusively featuring locally-based players, will run from August 2-30 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This regional hosting arrangement serves as important preparation for the three nations, who will jointly host the even larger 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The event marks a significant milestone for East African football, showcasing the region’s growing capability to host major continental tournaments and its commitment to developing homegrown talent.
