The Kenya Rugby Sevens team, Shujaa, departed on Sunday, March 23, 2025 for the Hong Kong leg of the World Rugby Sevens series. The tournament runs from March 28-30 at Kai Tak Stadium, with Kenya placed in Group C alongside Spain, Great Britain, and France.

Seeking Redemption After Tough Vancouver Outing

Currently ranked 9th in the overall standings with 15 points, coach Kevin Wambua’s squad hopes to improve their performance after intensive preparations at a residential camp in Nakuru. The team suffered disappointing results in Vancouver, losing all pool matches and ultimately finishing 12th.

Their Vancouver campaign began with a 24-0 loss to Argentina, followed by defeats against France (33-7) and Great Britain (28-10). Narrow losses to Uruguay (19-14) and Ireland in the playoffs sealed their 12th-place finish.

Coach Wambua Names Squad for Hong Kong

The coach has maintained most of his Vancouver squad, with George Ooro and Samuel Asati retaining leadership roles. New additions William Mwanji, Festus Shiasi and Brian Tanga bring fresh energy to the team.

Tournament Schedule and Expectations

Shujaa’s Hong Kong campaign begins Friday against Spain (6:39 AM), followed by Great Britain (9:20 AM). They conclude group play Saturday against France. The team aims to recapture their 2016 Singapore title-winning form after regaining World Series status in 2024.

Key Match Schedule:

  • Friday: vs Spain (6:39 AM), vs Great Britain (9:20 AM)
  • Saturday: vs France

Kenya earned their return to the World Series with a 33-15 victory over Germany in 2024, but has since struggled for consistency against elite competition.
