Kwankwaso Warns El-Rufai Against Attempting to Oust Tinubu with Jonathan-Era Tactics

APC Chieftain Accuses El-Rufai of Blackmail Against President Tinubu

In a fiery statement that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has launched a scathing attack against former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai. Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso, a key figure within the ruling party, has accused El-Rufai of resorting to what he termed “blackmail and lies” in an alleged attempt to undermine President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Outdated Tactics and Political Warfare

Addressing journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Kwankwaso did not mince words. He described El-Rufai’s approach as not only outdated but entirely ineffective in today’s political climate. Drawing parallels to the 2015 general elections, Kwankwaso warned that the strategies used to unseat former President Goodluck Jonathan would not work against Tinubu.

“You cannot oust President Bola Tinubu from the presidency in 2027 by engaging in the same method you did to former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, using poverty, insecurity, and economic devastation,” Kwankwaso asserted. “Your blackmail is clear to all.”

The statement reflects growing tensions within Nigeria’s political elite as the country looks toward the next election cycle. With Tinubu’s administration still in its relative infancy, opposition figures appear to be testing the waters—but according to Kwankwaso, their methods are transparent and destined to fail.

Defending Tinubu’s Record

Progress on Security and Economy

Kwankwaso went to great lengths to highlight what he described as “notable progress” made by the Tinubu administration in addressing two of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges: insecurity and economic instability. He credited National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for spearheading improvements in the security sector, pointing to recent successes in regions historically plagued by violence.

“Northerners are not stupid,” Kwankwaso emphasized, pushing back against the notion that the region could be easily turned against the federal government. “They can see the progress being made in areas like Birnin Gwari, Sokoto, and Borno.”

But what exactly does this progress look like? According to Kwankwaso, it includes the stabilization of commodity prices and a noticeable decline in banditry and terrorist activities—advancements he insists are being overlooked by critics like El-Rufai.

Challenges to Produce Evidence

In perhaps his most direct challenge, Kwankwaso demanded that El-Rufai provide concrete evidence to support allegations that the Tinubu administration was sponsoring banditry and other criminal acts. “In the absence of such evidence,” he stated, “El-Rufai should desist from further comments and allow the government to continue the good things it is doing for Nigerians.”

This call for evidence underscores a broader debate about accountability and rhetoric in Nigerian politics. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the public can expect more heated exchanges—but Kwankwaso’s remarks suggest that unfounded accusations will not go unchallenged.

The Emerging Opposition Coalition: A “Failure” in the Making?

Kwankwaso did not limit his criticism to El-Rufai alone. He took aim at what he described as an “emerging coalition of opposition politicians,” tagging it as “a failure” before it even gains momentum. The coalition, which reportedly includes figures like Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso, represents a significant threat to APC’s dominance—but according to the Kano chieftain, these individuals have little to offer.

“Who amongst them has performed as good as Tinubu when he had the chance?” Kwankwaso asked pointedly. The rhetorical question serves as a reminder of Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor, often cited by supporters as evidence of his capability to lead at the national level.

Yet, the opposition coalition cannot be dismissed lightly. With seasoned politicians and influential leaders in its ranks, it represents a formidable challenge to Tinubu’s reelection ambitions. Kwankwaso’s preemptive strike may well be an indication of the APC’s concern about this gathering storm.

Security Gains and Public Perception

Kwankwaso also pointed to recent successes by Nigerian security agencies in apprehending commanders of bandit and terrorist groups. These operations, he argued, are tangible proof that the Tinubu administration is making headway against some of the country’s most entrenched security challenges.

But how do these achievements align with public perception? For many ordinary Nigerians, insecurity remains a daily reality. While high-profile arrests are commendable, the true measure of success will be a sustained reduction in violence and fear across the nation.

Kwankwaso’s call for continued public support hinges on this very point. He urged Nigerians to “discard all forms of blackmail perpetrated by opposition figures” and rally behind the government’s efforts. Yet, with economic hardships persisting and security concerns lingering, the administration faces an uphill battle in winning hearts and minds.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The 2027 general elections may seem distant, but political maneuvering is already underway. Kwankwaso’s outburst signals that the APC is not taking any threats lightly—whether from within its ranks or from external opponents.

El-Rufai, once a key ally of Tinubu, now finds himself in the crosshairs of the party’s defenders. His criticisms, whether perceived as genuine concerns or political tactics, have clearly struck a nerve. As the election cycle approaches, more defections, alliances, and confrontations are inevitable.

For now, Kwankwaso’s message is clear: the APC stands united behind Tinubu, and any attempts to undermine his leadership will be met with fierce resistance. The coming months will reveal whether this unity holds—and whether the opposition can mount a credible challenge to one of Nigeria’s most enduring political figures.

As the nation watches these developments unfold, one thing is certain: Nigerian politics remains as dynamic and unpredictable as ever. The only constant is change—and the relentless pursuit of power.
