Transforming Lagos into a 21st Century Metropolis
The Lagos State Government has announced significant progress in its urban development initiatives, focusing on infrastructure upgrades and economic growth strategies. Special Adviser on Electronic Geographical Information System (eGIS), Mr. Olajide Babatunde, revealed these developments during an inspection tour of government facilities in Alausa, Ikeja.
Major Market Redevelopment Projects
The state is currently executing several high-profile market transformation projects:
- Dosunmu Market: Complete redevelopment following a fire incident
- Gberewura Onirin Market: Conversion into a modern shopping mall featuring anchor tenants like ShopRite and a cinema
- Jankara Market: Currently at 60% completion in its redevelopment
Infrastructure and Commercial Developments
Babatunde highlighted several ongoing infrastructure projects:
- Construction of a world-class international shopping center with mixed-use facilities including residential and hotel components
- Development of logistics hubs in Epe (completed) and Ikorodu (ongoing)
- Multiple road construction projects across the state
Technological Advancements and Urban Planning
The state is making significant strides in digital transformation:
- Near-completion of the Lagos Geographic Information Service (GIS) building
- Plans to establish GIS units across government agencies
- Automation of land use charge billing and digitization of land records
- Upgraded mapping system using new auto photo and lidar images
Policy Development for Sustainable Growth
The government is implementing forward-thinking urban policies:
- Development of a new urban policy and building code
- Proposed legislation for the Lagos Geographic Information Service
- Agricultural hubs and settlements to enhance food security
- Completion of a four-kilometer special agricultural zone
Improving Government Efficiency
The state is redeveloping office spaces to increase worker productivity. Employees from various agencies including the Lagos State Building Control Agency and Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency have expressed appreciation for the improved work environments.
“The government aims to create a fully-automated and technologically-advanced state, positioning Lagos as a centre of excellence,” said Babatunde.
The initiatives are part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda to transform Lagos into a model 21st-century city while improving residents’ quality of life and fostering economic prosperity.
